SEDIMENTS OF TOMORROW

The Brief:

To explore Afrofuturism and Speculative design, the task was to design three artefacts from South Africa in the year 2125. With 2125 South Africa under a broken sky, caused by layers of unsustainable actions generations before, the artefacts tell a story of the country’s adaptability, identity and heritage.

Before we can predict the future, we must reflect on the present. Climate change continues to be ignored, putting communities at risk, with many travelling for safety. Climate migration and travel became the foundational layers of my artefacts, the basic tools voyagers needs, including passports, medicine and entertainment.

‘Sediments of Tomorrow’ implies that, like the sediments of rock that shape our land, our current choices become the foundational layers for the future, which can ripple out and impact how tomorrow’s generations enjoy or bear the consequences of them.
